About Us

BACKGROUND

St. Mark's Episcopal School opened its doors in 1960 as a preschool full of eager children. As a parish day school of St. Mark's Episcopal Church its dream was to provide a nurturing early school. Over the years elementary grades were added and finally a middle school. St. Mark's now serves toddlers from the age of two to eighth graders with a sophisticated, challenging curriculum. The dream continues with a strong commitment to exemplary education which integrates the academic, physical, interpersonal, and spiritual development of its students.

MISSION STATEMENT
"The mission of St. Mark's Episcopal School is to provide a learning environment that fosters academic excellence while developing moral and spiritual character"

PHILOSOPHY
St. Mark's invites students capable of enriched instructional presentations to apply to its program. Within this framework, instruction, which recognizes the propensity of children to learn, challenges children's natural enthusiasm for new discovery. By differentiating instruction, teachers begin where the learner is and motivate students to advance themselves to their potential. Students are encouraged, engaged, and challenged to seek depth in their experiences and utilize resources from multiple sources. Class size is limited to create an intimate learning environment.

FACILITY
Located in the City of West University four miles from the Texas Medical Center and just minutes south of the Galleria, St. Mark's Episcopal School serves many families who work in the hospitals and offices of the Med Center as well as those who work at local universities and downtown. The school occupies four main buildings on campus that include three complete computer labs, two libraries, two complete science rooms, a gymnasium and stage, a multi-purpose cafeteria, music, art, and large bright new classroom spaces. The campus is networked so students may work in the labs or on classroom computers, and teachers and parents can e-mail each other easily. The facility surrounds an attractive courtyard and plaza where children enjoy lunch or outside lessons.

HIGH SCHOOL
The eighth graders from St. Mark's are welcomed and invited to all local public and private high schools. Students are accepted at all major private high schools in the Houston metropolitan area. Many of our children live in the surrounding neighborhoods and choose Bellaire and Lamar High Schools while others choose the High School for Performing and Visual Arts, or the High School for Health Professions.

ACCREDIATION
St. Mark's is accredited by the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools. S.A.E.S. is recognized by both the Texas Education Agency and the National Association of Independent Schools.
