Middle School Academics

(Grades Five Through Eight)

The middle-school years introduce students to self-discovery and newfound maturity. St. Mark's Middle School divides its curriculum into the Lower Middle School (grades five and six), and Upper Middle School (grades seven and eight). Each area of the curriculum builds upon what the student has studied in previous grades.

  • Reading programs and composition are emphasized in all grades with children surrounded by great literature.
  • In fifth and sixth grades, students concentrate on core mathematic principles in preparation for Pre-algebra in seventh grade and Pre-AP Algebra I Honors in eighth grade.
  • Science classes cover earth, physical and biological sciences. Hands-on labs enable students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in class.
  • Social studies advance student learning through Texas, United States and World History. Geography and Civics classes incorporate current events.
  • The Spanish program for grades four through six is designed especially for independent schools to bridge student learning from elementary-to-high school methods. It emphasizes language acquisition through creative work such as visuals and acting. A traditional textbook program in grades seven and eight completes Spanish I and prepares students for high school Spanish II.
  • Technology skills are integrated throughout the curriculum, and students are taught Microsoft Office, beginning web design and film-making in quarterly rotation classes. This rotation also includes one quarter each of religious studies, visual arts, and music and drama.
  • Health, religion and physical education are designed to develop a healthy mind, body and spirit.
  • Elective courses are designed to allow students to individualize their talents and interests.
Opportunities for Enrichment

6th grade students take Study Skills during enrichment period for the fall semester. They may choose an elective in the spring.

Opportunities for Leadership and Academic Recognition

St. Mark's provides opportunities for students to earn academic recognition and to participate in student government. Student council officers and representatives serve as student leaders for the Middle School. Students who demonstrate excellence in academics, responsibility and leadership are selected for the National Junior Honor Society during the Upper Middle School years. They may also participate in the Duke Talent Identification Program, The National Geographic Geography Bee, and The National Spanish Contest.
