PSIA
Volunteers Needed
We are in need of ten more volunteers the day of the event, March 27, 2010. Positions include judges, graders, Contest Director, Assistant Director. Choose an open job from the Volunteer List and email Kristin Uptmor at kuptmor@stmes.org with your name, job, and time slot OR if you have any questions. Your support is greatly appreciated. This is a great opportunity to showcase our school to the greater Houston area.
General Information
Over 50 St. Mark’s students will be participating in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) District 10AA Meet, which will be held on our campus March 27, 2010. St. Mark’s will be competing with six other area schools in this event. Finalists will participate in the PSIA State Meet at Texas Christian University on April 24, 2010.
For those of you unfamiliar with PSIA, it is an extracurricular academic program for elementary and middle school students, composed of various events throughout the grade levels. PSIA participation motivates students in many ways, including:
- refine mental aptitudes
- affirm self worth
- bring new excitement to learning
- develop teamwork and a sense of fair play
- experience the joy of achieving in a wholesome environment
- foster self discipline and perseverance
- achieve recognition for academic excellence
- enjoy camaraderie with students from other schools
- receive tangible awards for their academic abilities
- HAVE FUN!
Students have been selected by teacher recommendations and try-outs, as applicable. Volunteer coaches meet with students, but students are responsible for much of the practice at home. Participating in PSIA takes responsibility and self-discipline on the student’s part. Events we are participating in this year include: Art Memory; Calculator Applications; Creative Writing; Dictionary Skills; Maps, Graphs, and Charts; Mathematics; Number Sense; On-Site Drawing; Science; Spelling; Vocabulary; Storytelling; and Music Memory.
This is St. Mark’s second year to participate in PSIA. We expect our involvement to grow in the upcoming years, and with that growth and experience may come some modifications to the way we approach the event. Right now, we are extremely proud of our student participants and grateful to our staff coaches and volunteers. We will soon be asking for parent volunteers to assist on the day of the event, March 27th; keep posted!
Thank you for your support,
