The focus on 7th grade Pre-Algebra stays within four main branches: number theory/system, proportional reasoning, two and three-dimensional measurement, and statistics. Throughout the year, students focus on shifting their thinking from concrete to more abstract concepts. Students will further develop their ability to explain their thinking and reasoning both orally and through written expression. By balancing high expectations with a comfortable and playful environment, students are able to exceed in ways that build a strong sense of self. It is the goal that each child grows in their mathematical reasoning, but also their mathematical appreciation.
In 7th grade, students are encouraged to continue taking on more ownership of their learning as well as organization and management of deadlines and routines. Advisors and teachers work with students to develop further autonomy in the ways they study and learn. 7th graders develop stronger note taking and study skills, begin to personalize their approach to different material, and are encouraged to explore topics for themselves and drive their own learning to some extent. 7th grade classes are designed to give students more opportunities for choice in their learning and in demonstrating what they have learned. Additionally, 7th graders now have the option to take more challenging courses during Zero Hour or as an elective. Our students gain a significant amount of agency throughout the school year as they are empowered to make these decisions for themselves. There is also an emphasis on building leadership skills as students approach their 8th grade year.
