Faculty and Staff Experience a Design Thinking Challenge During In-Service

On Friday, October 9, 2015, a unique in-service activity took place. After arriving in the morning, the faculty and staff was split into eight teams, consisting of lower school teachers, middle school teachers, and administrators. The teams were given instruction for a design thinking challenge.

What is design thinking? According to the d.school at Stanford, design thinking is defined as: A process that defines the problem then implements solutions, always with the needs of the user demographic at the core of concept development.

The problem our teams were asked to address is a change to the lunch and dining experience at St. Mark's. In the morning, some group members conducted field research: interviewing students and staff at nearby schools, or observing the dining experiences at various nearby restaurants. After identifying the users and empathizing with their needs, teams worked to ideate and prototype a new dining experience. At the end of the day, each group presented their prototype to the rest of the faculty and staff.

The creativity, resourcefulness, and curiosity displayed by our faculty and staff was inspiring! By taking ownership of the problem, our team is taking initiative for the future of our school, truly displaying our Characteristics of Professional Excellence.

Design Thinking is a process that we are using throughout our school, from our Early Childhood program through our Middle School classes. It is just one area that we are developing to help our students take a fearless pursuit of knowledge and embrace exploration!
