Welcome to Food for Thought! We are excited to share dining program news. Here you will find information about the lunch menu, special dining programs and events, taste tests, and featured fruits for the month ahead.

It's Pumpkin Month!

During October we will be celebrating National Pumpkin Day, which is Tuesday, October 26.  We have four menu features during October that will showcase the versatility of using pumpkin in foods:

  • Monday, October 4 - Fettuccine Pumpkin Alfredo
  • Tuesday, October 12 - Pumpkin Bulgur Chili
  • Friday, October 15 - Pumpkin Energy Bars
  • Friday, October 22 - Pumpkin Hummus

Pumpkins are great fun to carve and are often associated with Halloween.  They’re also packed with nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin K, potassium, Vitamin E, and iron, which is why we dedicate our October lunch program to celebrating Pumpkin Day.

We’ll also have our first annual Pumpkin Carving Contest.  Each day the week of October 18 a school leader will carve a pumpkin during lunch with a student audience.  On Friday, all the pumpkins will be showcased, and students will vote for their favorite with orange or black jelly beans!

Did You Know?

  • The name “pumpkin” comes from the Greek word “pepon” which means “large melon.”  But it’s not a melon, it’s a gourd.  

  • Gourds are from the berry family, which makes pumpkins a fruit!

Menus and Updates

Lunch menus are available via the Flik App or online. Selections for our Primary School students can be found in the Portal.

Beginning October 1st, chocolate milk will be served on Wednesdays, instead of Fridays. This way, our students get a sweet treat mid-way through the week, without overwhelming their sugar tanks on Fridays, when we already offer dessert.

Flik is proud to provide sweet treats for our upcoming Halloween Class Parties. Room Parents will be placing those orders for their class / grade level. Look for more information in the coming weeks about the celebrations!

October's Tasty Tuesdays: Tuesday, October 12, and Tuesday, October 26

Have you heard about #TastyTuesdays? Each month, Chef Sergio shares a tasting experience for our students in Preschool 2s through 8th grade. By giving kids a small taste of a new flavor in their classrooms, we hope to encourage our kids to expand their palette, try something new, and learn more about nutrition. This month, students will first be tasting roasted pumpkin seeds with salt, lemon pepper and brown sugar.  The second Tasty Tuesday will feature honey roasted pumpkin chunks.
